The oil from birch bark can repel insects and treat skin conditions. The sap is a natural shampoo, and can remedy disentery and urinary infections. Birch leaves function as an anti-anflammitory and pain-reliever. The tough outer wrapping of the tree was formerly used by American Indians to fashion strong, lightweight canoes. Due to these reasons and more, birch have been designated National Memorial Trees for Mothers and were planted on the Capitol grounds in Washington, DC.
