Waters Edge by William Hays is a 13-color, 12x9 linoleum block, linocut print from a limited edition of 100.
This scene depicts the Connecticut river bathing in a golden sunset. Several greens, blues, and yellows are used to accurately recreate the reflection of sunset atop a river with all its complex shades and gradients. This attention to detail can also be seen in the gradient on the field of tall grass which glows in the sunset.
“I spent a great deal of time on the Connecticut River where the West River flows into it. Sunsets on the West River were a favorite experience in summer. I did many paintings of the scene and finally, this linocut print. The thick atmosphere of a summer day makes the sun a distinct disk and floods the scene with golden light.” ~ William Hays
